What is a referral and what is it for?
A referral is a request from another health professional (usually your doctor) for you to be seen by one of our clinicians. A valid Medicare referral enables us to request the appropriate Medicare rebate for you from Medicare. Some of our doctors do not require an external referral. If in doubt, please check with us. More information about referrals is available from Services Australia: https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/referrals-for-specialist-treatment?context=20
For our Immunologist Specialists, we do require you to have a referral before booking an initial consultation. The referral is required so the patient can access a Medicare rebate. However, we do have General Practitioners who specialise in allergy and it is not necessary to have a referral to see them. To improve communication between our team and your GP, referrals help us understand what issues are of concern and who best to include in communication. Referrals also help us identify who needs to be seen quickly.
