How do I prepare for my allergy appointment?
If you anticipate having a skin prick allergy test, please stop taking oral antihistamines 5 days prior to your appointment, and please stop taking antihistamine containing nasal sprays for 2 days prior to your appointment (e.g. Dymista, Ryaltris, and Azep).
BUT, if you are taking antihistamines for urticaria, and you would be uncomfortable if you stopped the antihistamine, please continue to take them. Also, if you have any other allergy symptom which would be worsened and uncomfortable, continue to take your antihistamine. Allergy testing can be arranged via a blood test after the consultation, and this is not affected by antihistamine treatment.
If you anticipate having a skin prick allergy test, please avoid using creams or moisturiser on your forearms from the day prior to your appointment.
For children, it is helpful to bring some distraction such as a book, iPad or toy. Please do not create fear by talking about needles and pain prior to the appointment. Our doctors and nurses can gently explain the procedure to your child during the visit.
